Laughter in the next room became a rhythm; rain on the roof turned into a gentle bassline. For Jaco Pastorius, the world was full of hidden melodies. A creak of floorboards, a snippet of a stranger’s whistle, he could spin them into song in his mind. That boundless musical imagination made him one of the most electrifying bass players of all time.

And it also led to moments like one night backstage in 1978, when Pastorius’ irrepressible curiosity took center stage in the most unexpected way.
